What is Leaf Lard?

August 21, 2024

Lard has so many uses, and not that long ago , it was a staple in our households for baking and cooking. Unfortunately, it was disregarded after industrial Crisco came about, a huge disservice to the public. To make lard, the fat from the pig must first be "rendered." An easy process, but a time consuming one. We have partnered with a local baker who does this for us in their licensed kitchen.

Lard is shelf stable for 2-4 months, but you can also freeze it or store it in the fridge for up to 2 years.

What could you use it for? Searing meat, making burgers, frying eggs (I use saved bacon grease for this), pie crusts and anything else that calls for butter or shortening.

Lard from pasture-raised or forest-raised pigs is rich in vitamins and nutrients.  And even better, it is now available locally in Newton, NC.

We have 2 types of lard available. Lard is from Fatback.  Leaf Lard is from Leaf Fat.  Both are great! Leaf Lard is just more pure and has no porky smell or flavor.
